!Happy Birthday David!

He’s so gorgeous and lovely, but I had great difficulty in trying to choose a picture to draw this year. I first wanted one with him smiling, like the one I drew last year [link] , but I couldn’t find a decent enough one. Then I decided I wanted to draw a Glass Spider/Never Let Me Down one because I love his hair And, at last, I settled on this one.
I spanned this out over three days, I think it has taken me about twelve to sixteen hours in total (I was diligently keeping track but then gradually failed to keep it up). I had to take many breaks from drawing it because having to shade in all the damn black in the picture really started to take its toll on my hand and wrist. My mechanical pencil has no comfy grip on it either, so my poor hand has been in a bit of pain. All worth it though, and I’m so glad its finished.

I put more effort into his hair this time round, and on his slight stubble. He has a bit more of a frown in the reference picture, but here I’ve given him just a little bit of a smile. This scan really does not do justice to the real thing – the paper itself has curled quite a bit where all the dark patches are and as a result there were nasty reflections on the scanned image. I tried my best to sort it out on adobe, but I’m gonna try and flatten the picture and perhaps scan it again at a later date.

I’m so pleased with this drawing, I haven’t done much drawing in a while because I’m in my last year of university and have been absolutely swamped with essays. But yay! Happy Birthday David Bowie!
